| Rochester Ravens Fly into New Era |
ROCHESTER, NY, 01/03/10 – This past Saturday the Rochester Ravens FC conducted the second leg of their two-day combine at the Doug Miller Sports Dome. The combine served as a way to form the team with ample time to train before the season begins in the summer. The team went looking for the greatest women soccer players in the surrounding area and they received a large turnout. Over 40 of the best women athletes in the area attended the combine and 17 women were selected for the team.
There were eight returning players from last year’s Ravens FC team. Those players included Ashley Grove (Maryland/Aquinas), Jessica Shufelt (UCONN/Greece Arcadia), and Brittany Godin (St. Rose/Greece Arcadia).
“They all looked in very good shape which is expected after their college seasons,” said Mark Howlett, Head Coach of the Ravens FC. “Even better, they all looked much more experienced and comfortable than last year, which is a good sign getting ready for the new season.”
There were nine new players selected for this year’s team. These players include Jacquie Lacek (Central Michigan/Aquinas), Erica Henderson (West Virginia/Aquinas), and Sarah Henderson (Colgate/Aquinas).
“With the addition of our new players, I think we are better at this stage than last year, which is a good indication that the program is moving forward,” stated Howlett. “We will still be very young which can be looked at as a negative, but with that also comes the hunger from the players and the willingness to work hard and trust us as coaches.”
The team looks forward to a few months of training before their season begins. Last year the team was assembled with less than a week before the first game due to the change of ownership. They hope that the increased preparation will lead to positive results in the upcoming season.
The Rochester Ravens FC begin their season at home against the defending league champions, Ottawa Fury, on May 29th at 3:00PM. The game will take place at Marina Auto Stadium and tickets are $5.00. Season tickets are $25.00 for seven games for adults and $10.00 for kids under the age of 15.
