Full 9 vs. 9 Tonight was the second part of our first double session and it consisted of a game of 9 vs. 9. We essentially played two 35-minute halves in a game-like setting. The coaching staff seemed to be very pleased with the scrimmage as they experimented with different player combinations. As for the players, I thought we played very well on tired legs. We were very organized and I believe that we are making the right strides. Tomorrow morning we will be practicing at Roberts Wesleyan again and we are only participating in a single session tomorrow. It's so exciting to see our team improve during each practice. I look forward to updating everyone on our practice tomorrow! -Jacquie P.S. - Don't forget the Twitter page!

Fitness Training is Producing Great Results Today at practice we continued our fitness training with ten 200 yard runs. We split up into two groups and both groups performed exceptionally well. It was very encouraging because none of the players on the team gave up or dropped out and that shows a lot about our character. The tough fitness drills are helping us improve not only our fitness level but our team camaraderie as well. After the fitness training we moved into our first session of scrimmaging. We did great for our first time playing an organized game together and it was very productive. Furthermore, our improved fitness was evident as we hustled hard to each 50-50 ball and made great runs. Tonight we have the second leg of our first double session day. These double sessions will go a long way towards improving before our first game on May 29th at 1:00 PM. I look forward to updating everyone on how we are doing! -Jacquie P.S. - Don't forget to follow us on Twitter!

Defensive Shape This morning at practice we worked on perfecting our defensive shape. The coaching staff started with the back four players in the formation today and rotated people to see different combinations. The team is still in the first week so it is essential that we find the right combinations of players in different scenarios. From a player's perspective, it took a little while to get used to the new defensive style, but as we got more repetitions things got better. Our communication picked up and helped us become more successful with our formation. Since today focused on the back four players of the formation, tomorrow the midfield component will be installed and practiced. I love to interact with fans so if you have any questions feel free to comment on the blog posts and I will respond as soon as I can! -Jacquie posted 5/20/2010 3:38 PM EST | Add Comment | View Comments (0) |

Defensive Shape - Part Two Today was the second part of our defensive shape practices. It started out with a normal warm-up and then a two mile run. Our goal was to get under 14 minutes and the majority of us did very well and achieved that. I was very proud of how everyone ran through it and nobody dropped out. The positive attitudes are very contagious on our team! Moving on, we started in a 4 vs. 2 defensive shape drill, which then transitioned into an 8 vs. 4 defensive shape drill. We had to defend while paying close attention to the offense trying to split us. After that, we played 6 vs. 6 and focused on the back four of the defense communicating and defending with the central midfielders. Our practices are getting better every time we step out onto the field together. We are all getting into a rhythm and getting used to playing with each other. As a result of our hard work, the coaches decided to cancel our night session and have us participate in double sessions on Monday. Running into the Season Hello! The season is almost here! Please come out and support us at our game Saturday, May 29th. We will be taking on a tough opponent in the Ottawa Fury. We would appreciate your support! Today at practice we indulged in more fitness activities. We conducted our normal warm-up, stretched, and then the fun began. From there we went into fitness training that will surely pay dividends. We ran two 800's, four 400's, 6 200's, and then 8 100's. It was tough but we know that it is necessary in order to be successful. I was extremely encouraged with how everyone fought through it and no one gave up. That seems to be a common theme with our team this year; we never give up! After the fitness activities we took a quick break and then worked on some more midfield defensive shaping. This consisted of a 4 vs. 4 drill where we worked on maintaining an 'L' shape and not getting split. After that we transitioned into our cool down activities and ended practice. Tonight we will be coming back for our second session and scrimmaging, which will help us put our drills into game scenarios. Thank you for following my blog! -Jacquie posted 5/24/2010 12:01 PM EST | Add Comment | View Comments (0) |

The Countdown Begins Countdown The countdown number keeps getting smaller! It's almost time for our first game. Today at practice we had our normal warmup routine and then we split into groups of 4. With the groups of 4 we worked on passing, moving, and communication. From there we began an 8 (offense) vs. 4 (defense) drill. The losing team had to go on defense and the drill helped us continue our defensive shaping improvement. After that we moved onto a 6 vs. 6 drill where it was a shorter field and five mini goals. Each time guarded two mini goals on the sideline and the remaining mini goal was in the center of the field with no team guarding it. This progressed into an activity where we used the two big goals on a shorter field instead of the 5 mini goals. Both of these activities helped us work on shifting the ball. Tomorrow we have practice in the morning again. Talk to you after! -Jacquie P.S. - Please follow our Twitter page and become friends with us on Facebook! posted 5/25/2010 12:45 PM EST | Add Comment | View Comments (0) |

Teambuilding Countdown: 2 practices Today at practice we worked on teambuilding and my dad came in to help the team conduct different activities. The first hour we participated in an activity that helped everyone get to know each other better. We filled out information on an index card and played a game called, "Two truths, one lie". There were a lot of interesting facts to be learned about each other! In the last hour we played two similar communication games and we weren't allowed to talk. First, we had to get everyone in order by our birthday. This provided a lot of challenges because of the different ways to interpret the word birthday but we ultimately completed the task successfully. Secondly, we had to put ourselves in order by where we were born. This was complicated as well but our leadership overcame the challenge. It was nice to go through these activities with each other because not only did we learn different ways of communicating, but we also got to know each other in ways other than soccer. Tonight is our kickoff dinner and I am looking forward to meeting all of our fans! See you there! -Jacquie posted 5/26/2010 12:30 PM EST | Add Comment | View Comments (0) |

Almost Time for First Game! Today we worked on more defensive shaping with a 5 vs. 2 drill where we continued to make sure we weren't getting split. Then we moved into a 6 vs. 6 drill where we worked on perfecting the positioning of our back 4 and center midfielders in certain scenarios. After that, we moved into set pieces and more specifically, corner kicks. The defensive and offensive aspects of corner kicks were looked at and we tried to implement specific strategies to be successful. We switched corners and did 10 kicks from each corner so that we understood both scenarios. Lastly, we had fun with a shooting drill that allowed us to fire some shots towards one of our goalies and the goalie coach. Even our head coach Mark Howlett joined in for a couple kicks to send a ball towards the goalie coach. I'm impressed with the positive attitude that our team is displaying and I think it will bode well for our upcoming games! -Jacquie posted 5/27/2010 12:34 PM EST | Add Comment | View Comments (0) |

Game Preparation Today was our last practice before our first game tomorrow. We conducted a walkthrough of what will take place during our game and reviewed what we have been going over in practice. After that we worked on what we are going to do for our warmup prior to the game tomorrow. That included touches on the ball, 4 vs. 4, and shooting. From there we broke up into starting 11 versus substitutes and we worked on pattern play and moved the ball around. That transitioned into 11 vs. 7 full field. After that we worked on set pieces: defensive corner kicks, offensive corner kicks, and free kicks outside of the 18 (defensive and attacking). Lastly, practice concluded with some shooting. Our energy level remained high as we are excited for our first game tomorrow. Tonight we are getting together for a team dinner at a house of one of our players. It should be a blast and I can't wait for the game tomorrow! -Jacquie posted 5/28/2010 4:38 PM EST | Add Comment | View Comments (0) |

Game Recap - May 29th vs. Ottawa Fury (L 2-0) At our game today things kind of started off a little hectic and that's what led to the first goal being scored against us in the first minute. With that being said, we stayed focused and sorted things out. We were able to hold Ottawa better while playing with a more defensive mindset. Unfortunately we got outplayed in the first half and a second goal went in against us right before the half ended due to a communication breakdown again. At halftime we talked things out and our attitude stayed positive. We decided to strive to score without allowing any more goals. We were able to generate a lot more opportunities and more offense. Our coach made good adjustments that allowed us to gain extra possessions using more pressure. Our goalie Allie Weiser kept us in the game as well. She made save after save! Also, our subs that came in contributed a lot as well and added valuable play to the game. We played well for our first time out together and our confidence was there even when we struggled at first. Nobody dropped their heads which shows a lot of character. The team is looking forward to tomorrow for our first away game. Hopefully we will have healthy bodies and come home with a win! -Jacquie |

Recap of Toronto Game Our game Sunday was a very fun game. After being on the vans for the road trip after the Saturday game, we came out with a lot of energy. That energy definitely showed in our play. The first goal against us was tough. They capitalized on a perfectly bouncing ball from a great cross. We played well on defense the whole game and we just had a tough break. In the second half our fitness training kicked in. We were very tired but we didn't show it. We kept working as a team. Nothing changed when the subs came in, as they played very well also. All of our hard work was rewarded in the 94th minute. There was a great ball that was crossed into the box and the scramble resulted in Chelsea Kuss scoring our first goal of the year! It felt good to drive out of Toronto with a tie. We would have liked to win but points are tough to come by on the road in this league. Therefore we will take the point and the confidence that comes along with it. Additionally, we are all motivated to win our next game because everyone sees the improvement we are making as a team. Today we have a day off and will be resuming practice on Wednesday and then on Friday. Saturday morning the team will be leaving for our away game at Ottawa. We look forward to avenging our loss on Saturday. Go Ravens! -Jacquie posted 6/1/2010 9:28 AM EST | Add Comment | View Comments (0) |

First Practice at Marina Auto Stadium Last night we practiced at Marina Auto Stadium for the first time. It was nice to be on our game field and become more acclimated to it. We started off with a big grid and split up into five teams of four. For five minutes we worked on two touch passing between our groups and then we worked on one touch and having "short, short, long" sequences. Next we divided into two teams and played 9 vs. 9 inside a square while working on possession. Each team would earn a point after 6 passes and then on the 7th pass we would have to get the ball through a gate and have a teammate run onto it. This simulated what happened against Toronto so we could work on it. The gate play helped to get people to run onto the ball. After that we used half of the field to play 6 vs. 6 and worked on the same scenario. People had to put the ball through the gate before they could have a 1 vs. 1 breakaway. Lastly, we worked on fitness and split into groups of 5 and ran 10 yard sprints. Each group competed to see who could finish first. The energy level at practice today wasn't great but that was understandable due to the weekend of games. We need to come back hard and be more focused for Friday's practice so that we will be ready for Ottawa on Saturday. Friday's practice will be at the Doug Miller Sports Dome from 4:30-6:00 and then we are going to attend the Rhinos game at night as a team. Talk to you later! -Jacquie posted 6/3/2010 3:06 PM EST | Add Comment | View Comments (0) |

Getting Ready for Ottawa Tonight's practice was real short as we prepared for our game tomorrow. We had a walk-through for the Ottawa game and talked about our strategy and how we wanted to get things done. After that we proceeded into partner passing to warm-up. In addition to partner passing we also played a circle game where it was 14 against 3 defensive players. We were only allowed two touches for the players on the outside and we had to keep it away from the middle. The person who lost the ball had to go into the middle and become a defender. Next, we worked on our positioning by having our starting 11 players on the field and moved the ball around to different areas. In each area we would shift and hold our spots to perfect where we wanted to be. Lastly, we worked on corner kicks doing 10 defensive kicks and 10 offensive kicks. In addition to the corner kicks, we worked on a couple other set pieces as well. Everyone seems to be ready for the game tomorrow. It is a very important game and we will be in good shape if we gain points in Ottawa. Tonight we also supported the Rochester Rhinos as they took on Minnesota. The game finished in a 0-0 tie. Remember to support the Rhinos as well! -Jacquie |

Couldn't Capitalize Hey everyone, I'm back! Last night we lost to the Hamilton Avalanche, 2-0. It was disappointing in the sense that we felt that we were more than capable of coming out and gaining a win. We started out strong and had a good warm-up, which made a win seem even more likely. We controlled about 90% of the game in the first half. Unfortunately we couldn't convert on many scoring chances and we ended the first half in a 0-0 tie. At halftime we tried sorting things out and discussed ideas relating to pressuring Hamilton more and generating more opportunities. We were optimistic in our second half strategy when we came back onto the field. In the second half we didn't convert our optimism very well and we ended up starting the half slowly. We broke down and Hamilton scored two goals against us in the first ten minutes of the half. We continued to have scoring opportunities such as corner kicks and chances in the box, but we couldn't convert. Overall, it was a disappointing loss and we learned a couple lessons. First, we shouldn't take an opponent lightly even if their record isn't spectacular. Second, we need to play at a consistent level every game. We didn't play the same way last night as we played against Toronto and Ottawa. If we had played with the same level of intensity as we did in those games, we could have performed very well. Tomorrow we are training and getting ready for Toronto on Sunday. Hopefully we can get a win on the road in Toronto! -Jacquie

Film Session Yesterday at practice we watched film for an hour before we went out onto the field. We watched film of the first half of the Hamilton game and then the two goals we allowed in the second half. Our coach paused it frequently and talked about our shape and where we were or should have been. Seeing our play on film helped us see how we were playing because when we are on the field we can't see certain things. The film gave us a new perspective and clarified some areas. After our film session we went out onto the field to warm up and play a little. We played 5 vs. 4 with our attacking 5 players against our 4 back line players. This allowed us to work on penetrating the defense and find gaps. More defenders kept being added and it ended up being 6 vs. 6 while working on our offense and moving the ball around. Tomorrow morning we head to Toronto for an away game. Hopefully we can come back with more points! After the game we have a week off between games. We will continue to practice and get better for the rest of the games this season! Talk to you later! -Jacquie

Time to Rest Hello everyone! Our team currently has over a week off to rest up and improve during practice. Hopefully the healing and practicing can get us our first win in front of the home fans on June 25th against Laval. The game is at Aquinas and I hope everyone is able to come out and support us! Last night at practice we began with a ten minute warm-up in groups where each group decided how they wanted to warm-up with the ball. Then we were divided up into two groups. From there we participated in a passing drill with 5 cones, 1 cone was in the middle and the other 4 formed a box. The drill focused on one touch passing and also turning with the ball. The main focus of the last night's practice was shooting as our coach conducted a lot of shooting drills. It took us awhile to get focused but after ten minutes we got on the same page and cleaned things up. We worked on patterns with runs, passes, and finishing, and every 5 minutes the pattern was changed. We did this drill for 45 minutes and then we had a competition to see who scored the most goals in 5 minutes between two different groups. Lastly, we played a game of 6 vs. 6 vs. 6 and a team only had to score one goal to win. We played on half of a field and the first goal won. The winning team stayed on the field and the first team to 5 wins won the whole game. Last night's practice was very competitive and it was also a very beneficial practice. It's imperative that our shooting gets better if we want to start winning some games because you can't win if you don't score. Our upcoming practices are Wednesday and Friday this week, and then Monday and Wednesday next week before our game Friday. Hopefully our practices can have a high work rate and high intensity so we can continue to improve. Talk to you soon, Jacquie

Improving Communication and Goal Setting Last night's practice went really well. At first Bernie Iacovangelo conducted a workshop about communication before we went onto the field. During the workshop we split into groups and we had to try to build the tallest free standing tower. It took 20 minutes to plan and organize but it helped us improve in each area while teaching us to trust each other and be accountable. After the workshop we went out onto the field and had a very intense training session. We played 5 vs. 5 for 30 minutes with cones and then we used two big goals and played a half field game of 5 vs. 5 with a neutral player. Similar to Monday's practice, the winning team stayed on and the winner of the game was the first team to 5 wins. Lastly, we set team goals for the season moving forward. Our goals included winning the next game, coming together more, not to let in any goals in the first 20 minutes or the last 20 minutes, and our biggest goal is to make it to the playoffs. It's nice to talk about these goals because we feel like we are starting to take control of our season, something that should benefit us greatly. Friday night we are playing a scrimmage and then we have the weekend off. Next week we will be training on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday night before our game on Friday. Friday's game is against the Laval Comets at Aquinas and it starts at 7pm. Tickets are only $5.00. I hope to see you there! -Jacquie

Scrimmaging Tonight at practice we were supposed to conduct a scrimmage but those plans got changed at the last minute. Instead we basically just played against each other for the entire practice. The first 35 minutes consisted of a 10 vs. 10 scrimmage, where we played without any restrictions. After that we took a break and moved one of the goals to midfield so that we could play a smaller 5 vs. 5 game. This game was the same that we have been playing throughout the course of the week where the first team to score won and the first team to win 5 games won the whole activity. Towards the end of practice we worked on our fitness. That included relay races and different activities where we dribbled with the ball in different combinations. After that we finished up with a cool-down. We will be practicing Monday and Wednesday and then on Friday we play against Laval at Aquinas. The game starts at 7pm and we hope you can make it! See you there! -Jacquie

Short Recap of Last Night Last night we began practice by playing a game where the team was in a circle and there were two defenders on the inside. The players on the outside had to keep it away from the defenders by passing it to each other using only two touches. If a defender won the ball they went back to the outside of the circle. After about 20 minutes we split up into two teams and worked on some offensive pattern play, with an emphasis on the midfielders and forwards making runs. After a little while we added defenders and continued working on the patterns. After we added defenders we ended up playing 8 vs. 8 and incorporated the patterns we had been working on. Lastly, we finished with a good fitness session so that we are making sure we keep up our endurance. The fitness session capped off a very good practice in which everyone worked very hard. Our next practice is tomorrow (Wednesday) at Roberts Wesleyan. We are continuing to improve and we are striving to pull out a positive result on Friday! We hope to see you at the game! -Jacquie

Busy Weekend Ahead With two games on the horizon this weekend the team practiced Wednesday night and then at Aquinas last night. The practices were essential, especially the one at Aquinas so that we could get acclimated with the field. Only a few girls on the team have played at Aquinas before and therefore most of the team wasn't familiar with the venue. Wednesday night's practice began with a square passing drill, which involved working on both our right and left footed passes. We worked on more pattern plays, improving our touches, and passing with pace. After working on that drill for a little while we had a goal scoring competition. We then started playing the 5 vs. 5 scrimmage game that we have been playing for the last few practices. This time there was a twist. Instead of the first team to score winning, we played 5 minute games and the winner at the end of 5 minutes won that individual game, unless a team scored two goals, which also gave them a win. Last night's practice at Aquinas began with a dribbling warm-up that had restrictions to keep us focused and working on different aspects. After that we broke up into two groups, starters and reserves. The two groups worked on the pattern play and then transitioned into scrimmaging against each other. After that we worked on shooting with both of our feet so that we are well prepared for our opportunities in the upcoming games. Everyone on the team is really excited for the game tonight and the game Sunday. We really need to win and we are well aware that if we earn a win tonight we will have renewed life to our season. We still have the opportunity to make the playoffs, but it must start tonight! -Jacquie

Recap of Games This Past Weekend This weekend we had two home games, with the first game being played against the Laval Comets at Aquinas Stadium and the second game being played against the Quebec City Amiral at Marina Auto Stadium. I will recap both games for you. In the first game we seemed to be working really well together for the first 30 minutes. Then, when Laval scored the first goal at the 30 minute mark we kind of let it get to us and our play wasn't as good. We weren't committing the way we should to each 50-50 ball and it was disappointing. We know that we could have done better. After the game we discussed how to move on from the game and become accountable. Those two things were important because we had a game on Sunday with only a day's worth of rest. Our game against Quebec City yesterday displayed a lot of improvement in comparison to Friday's game. We came out and played hard from the first whistle and we played a solid 90 minutes. Unfortunately the referee called a penalty on us and it ended up being the difference. Overall, we really bounced back as a team and we didn't drop our heads. We pulled through and had many chances to equalize and then pull ahead in the game. As a result, we will need to work on shooting more because we need to have more confidence when on offense. We really played well as a unit defensively and we hope that it continues. We have a couple practices this week and then a game at home on Friday against Toronto. The game begins at 7:00 PM and is being played at Marina Auto Stadium. Our two best games have been against Toronto so we are hoping to get our first win on Friday! Talk to you soon, Jacquie

Recap of Wednesday's Practice and Game Tonight We had practice on Wednesday night at Roberts Wesleyan and we began by playing a 5 vs. 2 game. We kept track of each team's points and a point was earned when 5 passes were completed and then the ball was passed into another grid. The first team to 5 won the game. Then we took a break and played the same game except we were only able to use 2 touches. Next we transitioned into a scrimmage-type game of 7 vs. 7. There were 3 goals and we were only allowed two touches. If we scored by switching the field we earned 2 points from the goal, but if we attacked without switching then the goal was only worth 1 point. When we finished that game we ended the practice with some more shooting. Tonight we are playing against the Toronto Lady Lynx at Marina Auto Stadium at 7:30pm. Two of our best games have been against Toronto and we hope that we can play just as well if not better tonight. We would really love to get our first win in front of the home fans! We look forward to seeing everyone at the game tonight. Go Ravens! -Jacquie

Practice at the Dome Last night we had practice at the Doug Miller Sports Dome from 6pm-8pm. We began our warm-ups in groups of 4 and worked on our touches and turning when receiving a pass. Then we had goals on each end and Coach would tell us which way to turn towards the goal. After that we played two different games of 5 vs. 2, a game of 5 vs. 5 vs. 5 in a big grid (2 offensive teams vs. 1 defensive team), and then we moved the goal up and played our usual 5 vs. 5 scrimmage game. The first team to score stayed on and the first team to 5 wins won the whole game. After those games we finished with shooting. The practice went well as we prepared for Hamilton tomorrow and we had a new goalkeeper join the team. The three goalkeepers on our roster are unavailable so it was imperative that we picked up a new goalie. She trained with us last night and met the team. Tomorrow night we play Hamilton and we are hoping to get payback on them for their win in Rochester earlier in the year. Wish us luck! -Jacquie

First Franchise Win Wednesday's win over the Hamilton Avalanche in Hamilton was a great stepping stone for our organization. It may only be one game but it is a step in the right direction and something that we can build on. At first we were frustrated with the field location and the weather delay but we ultimately ended up playing on an indoor field with air conditioning. We were missing some starters but the players we had really stepped up. More specifically, Jessica Sexton played really well for us in goal in her first game as a Rochester Raven! She had a phenomenal first half and really helped us out! Eileen's goal came with about 20 seconds left in the first half and it provided us with a nice momentum boost going into halftime. Brooke then scored shortly after the second half began and we were on top 2-0 for the rest of the game. We are looking forward to this Wednesday's game as it is our home finale and we hope that it can provide our home fans the franchise's first home win! It would be nice to head into the final weekend of the season with a two game winning streak! Talk to you later, Jacquie

Final Blog Entry of the Season I hope you have been enjoying my blog this season! I've had a fun time filling in everyone on the details of our season and giving people an inside look at what we have done. It was a long drive to our game on Friday and we had to get up early in the morning to make it there on time. We arrive at our hotel at 3:00 PM and then rested a little before going to the field for our 7:30 PM game. Considering the circumstances of the travel we played very well. Unfortunately the other team scored a goal that ended up winning the game. They beat us on the outside and then put in a rebound off of a saved shot. After that we had a lot of opportunities to tie the game but we just couldn't put the ball in the back of the net. The final score was frustrating because we knew we had played really hard. The game against Laval the next day was delayed a little because of a storm but we kicked off only a half hour later than expected. We started the game slow and sluggish, which seemed to be the result of being tired on the road trip and all of the travelling. We were down 2-0 relatively early as we had a hard time sorting things out. At halftime our coach motivated us really well and our play improved in the second half. It seemed as though we were on their end of the field for about 75% of the second half! We didn't give up and we gave everything we had for the last 45 minutes of the season. This week we will have a team meeting to wrap things up and see everyone for the last time this summer. It was a fun season and I feel that everyone represented the Ravens very well while making many memories. I want to thank everyone who supported the team this year, as your support meant a lot to us as we battled throughout the season. It was always nice to look up into the stands and see people who we knew were behind us and were passionate about our performance. Thank you! -Jacquie
